My pride watching son shine

There are moments as a parent that just stick with you, capturing a feeling so pure it almost takes your breath away. This weekend, I had one of those moments watching Max at his football training camp.

The setting was a world away from a sunny outdoor pitch. We were inside a large, cavernous facility. The air was cool, almost cold against my skin, a stark contrast to the energy on the field. Above, bright artificial lights hummed, casting an even glow over the green artificial grass beneath. It’s a familiar environment for many young athletes, a dedicated space for skill and passion.

And in that moment, this haiku came to mind:

It perfectly encapsulated the scene. The sensory details were sharp: the cool air, the synthetic turf, the bright, almost sterile light. Yet, despite the artificiality of the environment, the experience itself was incredibly real and deeply moving.

Watching Max out there was everything. Seeing him chase the ball with enthusiasm, learn new drills, develop his skills, and genuinely have fun—it filled me with an overwhelming sense of pride. He wasn't just playing; he was shining. That light wasn't coming from the overhead fixtures; it was radiating from him.

These are the moments we live for as parents, aren't they? Seeing our kids engaged, happy, and growing. It’s a reminder that even in the most engineered environments, the most genuine joys can emerge. The "artificial" faded away, leaving only the warmth of a parent's heart watching their child thrive.
